Some of Denver's biggest attractions waive admission fees on their "free museum days." These Denver events in May allow you to take advantage of their generosity and save money while seeing some great artwork and exhibits.
More fun Denver events in May are the traveling exhibits at our top museums. Many of them bring in temporary exhibits that offer you the chance to see some new pieces during your visit. Here are some of the top picks this month.
Denver Art Museum: Norman Rockwell: Imagining Freedom. Norman Rockwell is famous for his classic paintings representing Americans in their everyday life. His art was used to help promote notions of freedom and support for the USA that would help citizens support the World War II effort against the Nazis.
Denver Botanic Gardens at York Street: Ursula von Rydingsvard The Contour of Feeling. This interesting exhibition of her work is usually presented outside in nature. However, this combination of towering cedar and bronze sculptures that are set inside the museum so you get a very different perspective of her work both in size and composition.
If you plan to check out several of Denver's museums this month, make sure to check out the Mile High Culture Pass. This pass is a discount card that includes admission to many of Denver's top museums including the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Botanic Gardens, and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.
This 3-day pass offers you admission to each museum once. Overall, you will save quite a bit with this pass vs. paying for admission to all of these museums separately.
One of the most anticipated Denver events in May is Opera Colorado's performances of Puccini's Tosca.
This opera closes the 2020 season with this incredible show of people obsessed with power and vengeance. When a corrupt police chief gives Tosca, a famous prima donna, a hateful proposition of either giving into his advances or having her beloved executed, the question is who will survive this horrible ordeal and come out as the winner.
There is a pre-performance discussion before each show. It will be performed in Italian with English and Spanish subtitles. The show is at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Performing Arts Complex.
This opera always sells out quickly, so plan ahead and buy your tickets.
Are you excited to learn more about the public art of Denver? If so, you will love these free walking tours offered by Denver Arts & Venues.
